Thailand’s corn production to grow by 2% in MY 2024/25
In the first five months of MY 2024/25, Thailand’s corn imports increased by 83% year-on-year.
According to the USDA, the forecast of corn production in Thailand for MY 2024/25 remains unchanged at 5.4 mln tonnes. This is 2% more than in MY 2023/24, due to the expansion of planted areas and higher average yields.
During this period, corn production will improve due to better weather conditions and less drought compared to 2023/24 MY. As of December 2024, the average farmgate price for corn was USD 244 per ton, down 7% from last year. The decline in prices is mainly due to increased local corn production and a sharp increase in duty-free corn imports from neighboring countries, particularly Myanmar.
In the first five months of MY 2024/25, Thailand’s corn imports increased by 83% year-on-year, which is 84% higher than the average imports over the last five years. This was primarily due to the recovery in the pork and poultry sectors. Pig production is expected to reach 80% of the planned capacity before the ASF outbreak in 2022.
The government’s policy on imports of feed corn and alternative raw materials remains unchanged. From February 1 to August 31, 2025, importers can import feed corn duty-free under the Asean Free Trade Agreement. They must also purchase 3 tons of domestic corn for every ton of imported feed wheat.
