Tanzania sees wheat and edible oil production as a path to reducing import dependence

Tanzania’s Minister for Agriculture, Daniel Chongolo, has called on the Cereals and Other Produce Regulatory Authority (COPRA) to expand its strategic areas of focus. Speaking on November 25, he emphasized the need to prioritize the development of wheat and edible oil production as key steps toward lowering the country’s reliance on imports.

According to the minister, COPRA should establish long-term policy commitments aimed at increasing the output of strategic crops and broadening market opportunities to strengthen Tanzania’s economy. Chongolo also instructed the authority to explore opportunities in cloves and cocoa production.

He noted the importance of launching production swiftly in certain regions, particularly Morogoro, which is to receive 500,000 seedlings to begin cultivation. He further recommended involving youth from the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), stressing that with minimal support they can effectively provide extension services to farmers across various areas.

Chongolo praised the work of the digital auction system operated through the Tanzania Mercantile Exchange (TMX) and the Warehouse Receipt Regulatory Board (WRRB). He said these institutions should continue focusing on segments that deliver the highest added value within the agricultural and trade value chain.

The minister also directed the Cashewnut Board to verify pesticide spraying practices on cashew farms by engaging Extension Officers and youth from the BBT–Cashew programme. This, he noted, will help close oversight gaps and improve the productivity and efficiency of cashew production.
