Syria receives over 134 thsd tons of wheat from Ukraine and Russia
Syria continues to systematically replenish its strategic wheat reserves following a poor domestic harvest. Five vessels from Ukraine and Russia have delivered more than 134,000 tonnes of grain to the ports of Lattakia and Tartous, the Syrian Grain Corporation (Syrian Grain Corporation) reported.
The shipments are part of a regular programme to secure milling wheat supplies and ensure the stable distribution of subsidised bread across all governorates. Years of drought have left local wheat production well below domestic requirements, making imports essential for food security.
Hasan Othman, Director General of the Syrian Grain Corporation, confirmed that deliveries are proceeding without disruption. “We closely monitor vessel arrivals and coordinate every stage – from unloading to storage – to guarantee quality and timely supply to mills,” he said.
Earlier, on 9 November, three vessels carrying more than 70,000 tonnes of wheat were unloaded at Tartous. The latest arrivals are a continuation of a series of contracts signed with private suppliers to maintain uninterrupted access to this strategic commodity.
