Syngenta registers X-Terra hybrid wheat in France
Syngenta has received registration approval for its hybrid wheat X-Terra in France, paving the way for commercial rollout in one of Europe’s key grain markets. France is considered a strategic launch platform due to its large wheat-growing area and its central role in EU grain production and exports.
According to the company, X-Terra is the first hybrid wheat in Europe designed for broad industrial-scale deployment. The development aims to enhance the resilience of wheat production to climate change, including increasing weather variability and the growing frequency of extreme weather events.
Syngenta states that the hybrid system delivers greater yield stability, improved stress tolerance, and enhanced agronomic performance. This is expected to support the transition toward more resource-efficient wheat production models and optimize the use of key inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and crop protection products.
“Wheat remains one of the most important crops globally, providing nearly one-fifth of total calorie consumption worldwide,” said Onur Kamili, Head of Field Crop Seeds Europe at Syngenta. He noted that the launch of a scalable hybrid system reflects the company’s strategic focus on accelerating innovation, adding that X-Terra demonstrates productivity and stability levels exceeding those of conventional varieties.
The company also emphasized that wheat is one of the most genetically complex food crops. By applying whole-genome analysis to identify genes responsible for key traits — including vigor, nutritional value, and resilience to extreme weather — Syngenta has developed its hybrid technology and continues refining its breeding processes to enable large-scale commercial adoption.
The introduction of X-Terra in France will serve as a starting point for further expansion into other European markets, including the United Kingdom and Germany. During the 2026 planting season in France, the first commercial products in the portfolio will include the hybrids SY Sphynx and SY Xanthis.
