Sunseed harvest in Ukraine this year may not exceed 10.5 million tons

At current yields, the expected gross sunseed harvest will be about 10.5 million tons, a level that will not cover the capacities of the surplus processing industry. This is reported by Spike Brokers.
As of October 16, sunflower was harvested in Ukraine from an area of 3.9 million hectares, with a gross harvest of 7.1 million tons, which corresponds to an average yield of 1.84 tons/hectare. The total expected harvest area is 5.1 million hectares, which means that about 1.2 million hectares remain until the end of the harvest campaign.
“Provided that the yield on the remaining areas in the regions is 10% higher than the current level, the expected final gross sunflower harvest could reach approximately 10.5 million tons. This level of sunflower harvest will cause a significant shortage of raw materials for the already surplus processing industry of Ukraine,” brokers note.
According to Spike Brokers, sunflower oil prices are gradually strengthening. Spot premium due to lack of supply already applies to November deliveries. At the same time, prices in the direction of ports have increased to the level of $ 1255-1260/t with delivery in October-November.
In Ukraine, processing plants are still trying to restrain the growth of purchase prices, protecting the processing margin. During the week, sunflower seed prices have already begun a gradual recovery and have increased to $ 5/t including VAT.
The spot price index for sunflower seeds for delivery within 30 days increased by $3/ton including VAT to $677/ton including VAT. This is the price for the basic quality 8/3/48, adjusted for the cost of transportation from the plant to the SRT Odesa base.
