Spring is coming: Argentine wheat fields need more rain, exchange says

Argentina’s wheat fields need more rainfall in the coming weeks, the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange said Thursday, noting that dry weather has damaged crops in some western areas as spring approaches in the southern hemisphere.
Argentina, the world’s largest wheat supplier, has planted about 6.3 million hectares (15.6 million acres) of the crop for the current 2024/25 season, the bourse said in its weekly report.
“Critical stages of unfavorable conditions are beginning to set in areas where there has been no rainfall (in recent weeks),” it added.
Meanwhile, according to the exchange, the most important wheat-growing areas in Argentina’s agricultural center as well as the southern province of Buenos Aires have received ample rainfall over the past month.
Spring in this South American country begins on September 21, and farmers start harvesting wheat in November.
