Spanish farmers demand to reduce imports of Ukrainian grain
Unión de Uniones, an organization representing the interests of farmers in Spain, demands to find a solution to increase grain imports from Ukraine, which are growing. This is reported by the press service of the Unión de Uniones.
On Wednesday, September 25, a rally will be held in the port of Santander in Spain to demand control over Ukrainian imports, which are driving down grain prices in the country. On Monday, September 23, a similar protest was held in front of the European Union building in Madrid.
The Spanish organization Unión de Uniones is protesting against the excessive growth of grain imports, especially from Ukraine, and is calling on the European Commission to reduce them to avoid ruining farmers.
“Farmers are not going to sit idly by until the safeguard provisions are implemented and imported grains meet the same conditions as those required of us,” said Luis Cortes, state coordinator of the Unión de Uniones.
It is noted that imports of Ukrainian grains increased so much that they amounted to almost 8.4 mln tons in 2023 and almost 6.5 mln tons in the first half of 2024.
“Spain receives more than half of the Ukrainian grain entering the EU, and at ever lower prices,” the Union de Uniones pointed out as a determining factor in the country’s grain price drop, which has amounted to 45% since May 2022.
Unión de Uniones also demands that the administrations examine the margins on certain products made from grain raw materials: “It is unacceptable that while cereals have fallen in price by 45% and electricity by 70%, animal feed has fallen in price by only 30% and bread has risen in price by 9%.”
For this reason, they call for the introduction of assistance to compensate farmers and livestock producers who find themselves in this situation.
