In Spain, the Union of Farmers and Livestock Breeders Unión de Uniones gathered more than 300 farmers in the port of Santander to protest against the growing imports of Ukrainian grain, the organization said in a statement.

They insisted that farmers “cannot continue to be the ones who pay the price for all the political agreements that are taking place in Europe.”

They also criticized Agriculture Minister Luis Planas, who seems to want to confront farmers and ranchers with his statements in Brussels on the matter.

On September 23, he said that the grain from Ukraine was of “the highest quality” and that the price at which the imports were sold was “reasonable.”

“Cantabria is a region with a large number of livestock, so we cannot sit idly by while costs continue to rise. Although it is not directly related to the increase in grain imports from Ukraine, it is still there. We don’t want to sell cheap cereals and buy expensive feed,” said Luis Cortez, the Union’s state coordinator.

The organization insists that the Regulation supporting Ukraine provided for certain protective measures for some sensitive products at the EU level, and if the same criteria were applied to imports of wheat and corn entering Spain from Ukraine, they should have already reintroduced the tariffs that were canceled.

The Union de Uniones said that in protest, they would not hesitate to take tractors to the streets this winter if necessary.
