Sowing in Ukraine delayed by a week due to cold weather

Due to the cold snap, this year’s sowing campaign is 200 thousand hectares behind last year, which is not critical, since farmers will work around the clock from this week.
First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotsky said this on TV.
“The April cold snap affected the progress of the sowing campaign – it actually stopped for a week. Compared to last year, 200 thousand hectares less land have been sown so far. But on our scale, when it is planned to sow more than 13 million hectares with all crops, such a delay is not critical and will not affect the campaign, which is being resumed and will continue around the clock,” Vysotsky said.
At the same time, due to the cold weather, horticulture, primarily early stone fruits – apricots and peaches, has found itself at risk. However, the result of the cold snap’s impact on these crops will be assessed only in a few weeks.
“As for the production of grains and oilseeds, as of today, there are no critical consequences from this weather, because the vegetation period in the absolute majority of crops of these crops has not yet occurred. Therefore, speaking of food security, there is no threat to the production of grains, oilseeds and, accordingly, flour, bread or livestock products as of today,” the Deputy Minister emphasized.
