South American sowing prospects remain favourable

Normalizing Weather Conditions Support High Crop Potential in Argentina and Brazil
According to World Weather, Inc., weather conditions in South America in September 2025 are close to long-term norms. Soil moisture in Brazil and Argentina is assessed as satisfactory, which creates good conditions for spring sowing.
Argentina
The sowing campaign for wheat and barley in June-July was generally successful. In the west (Cordoba, San Luis, La Pampa, western Santa Fe) there was drought, but late August rains significantly improved soil conditions. The main sowing regions – Buenos Aires, eastern Cordoba and Santa Fe – have received sufficient rainfall and are now ready for active crop growth in early spring. Sunflower sowing has already begun, and corn will be sown in the coming weeks.
Brazil
The seasonal drought typical for early September persisted in the central-west and central-south regions. In the south (Rio Grande do Sul, southern Paraná and southern Paraguay), moisture reserves are above normal and regular rains are expected until the end of the month. This creates the preconditions for a good winter wheat harvest and a successful start to the sowing campaign for corn and rice.
As for soybeans, farmers traditionally begin sowing after September 15, when the insurance coverage comes into effect. The onset of pre-monsoon rains is decisive. Last year, their absence led to delays in sowing and a chain of subsequent postponements of the harvest and sowing of second-crop corn (sofrini). However, this year is starting with normal weather conditions: the second half of September and October should bring sufficient precipitation for a quick start to the soybean sowing campaign.
Influence of climate cycles
There are no major climate anomalies (El Niño or La Niña) observed so far. The forecast indicates the possibility of a weak La Niña in late autumn, but its late formation is usually accompanied by sufficient precipitation in the central-western regions of Brazil. Drier conditions may be observed in eastern Argentina and southern Brazil, but their impact is assessed as limited.
Summary
As of mid-September 2025, South America enters the new season with favorable prospects for sowing, germination and initial development of cereals and oilseeds. High yields are expected for wheat, barley, soybeans, corn and rice. In addition, good conditions are forecast for rice, sugar cane, citrus and coffee.
