Snow in May Stuns Romania

From May 2 to 9, 2025, Romania faced extraordinary weather conditions that severely impacted its agricultural sector. In the southern and southwestern counties of Mehedinți and Dolj, heavy downpours, hail the size of chicken eggs, and even unexpected snowfall—a true anomaly for May—wreaked havoc. In a short time, the storms damaged 220 households, destroyed dozens of cars, and wiped out dozens of hectares of crops in Dolj County. Local authorities are currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by the extreme weather.
Meteorologists predict that a Greenland anticyclone will dominate the first half of May, bringing unstable weather with above-average precipitation. May 2025 could exceed multi-year rainfall averages, which may benefit the drought-prone southern regions. However, uneven distribution of rain and snow, coupled with the risk of severe storms, hail, and even tornadoes—as seen in previous years—poses significant threats. Local agronomists emphasize the importance of efficient water drainage to protect crops from flooding and other weather-related damage.
The unprecedented May snowfall and storms present new challenges for Romanian farmers struggling to mitigate the impacts of this weather anomaly.
