Romanian farmers report millions in flood losses
Farmers in Romania’s Galati county have had their crops destroyed by floods, and the losses are estimated at millions of euros. Soybean, rapeseed and alfalfa crops were destroyed, while corn and sunflower are still standing. This was reported by DIGI.24.
Thousands of hectares of crops remained under water 6 days after the flood.
“The corn is dry, it was supposed to be harvested at this time. Forget it! It’s perfectly dry, just when it was supposed to be harvested! It will stay in the field. We don’t know when we will be able to come in…” says a local farmer.
If there is no help from the government, farmers say they will not have the money to pay their debts to banks and risk going bankrupt.
“This year has been the worst since I’ve been farming. This year is connected with the maturity dates of loans from banks, because 3 years ago we bought a very expensive machine. A flood comes and destroys our irrigated area, on which we spent billions. It’s a complete disaster, I don’t know how we will survive…” said farmer Robert Viera.
