Romanian sunflower seeding has started earlier than usual, driven by favorable soil moisture and temperature conditions. According to UkrAgroConsult, farmers are adapting sowing timing to field conditions rather than traditional calendars.

The soil temperature reached about +11°C, well above the minimum threshold required for sunflower planting, ensuring stable germination and reducing disease risks. This allowed farmers in western Romania to begin fieldwork ahead of schedule.

Market expectations remain strong, with sunflower area projected around 1170–1230 K ha, supported by high margins despite rising fertilizer costs and climate risks.

Price levels continue to support farmer decisions, with buyer indications near 630–635 USD/mt while sellers target higher levels due to tight stocks. This reflects strong demand from processors and traders.

UkrAgroConsult notes that market balance will depend on new crop arrivals and external factors, including Argentina’s production, which may influence price dynamics in the coming months.

Key trends

  • Early seeding driven by weather and soil conditions
