Romania wants to become one of the owners of the Moldovan port of Giurgiuleşti

Romania is considering buying ICS Danube Logistic, the majority owner and operator of the port of Giurgiuleşti in Moldova.
Moldova also has a minority stake in the company.
The port handles both river and sea vessels and is Moldova’s only outlet to the world’s seas, and also has an oil terminal.
Romania has announced a tender for consultancy services worth over €400,000. In August 2024, the country’s government approved a memorandum of understanding to start negotiations.
ICS Danube Logistic is a Dutch company owned by the EBRD. It has controlled and operated the port of Giurgiuleşti since 2004.
Of the six terminals in the port of Giurgiuleşti, one is still owned by the state, while the other five are owned by the EBRD.
In September 2023, Moldova announced plans to modernize the port and is looking for a foreign partner.
The expansion and modernization of the port will require dredging to increase the depth of the shipping channel from 7 to 12 m, strengthening the pier, building new grain silos, access roads, and a railway station for loading and unloading wagons.
Further development of the grain sector in the Black Sea and Danube region will be discussed at the 23 International Conference BLACK SEA GRAIN.KYIV on April 24 in Kyiv.
