Romania allocates almost €100 million to farmers who blocked the border with Ukraine

On January 25, the Romanian government approved three decisions on additional assistance to farmers who had previously blocked checkpoints on the border with Ukraine, demanding subsidies and protection from the impact of Ukrainian imports. This was announced by the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The first decision of the Romanian government creates a state aid scheme to reduce the excise tax on diesel fuel used in agriculture until the end of 2024. It was allocated 270 million lei (€54.25 million).
Two more decisions provide for the creation of a state aid program to support the activities of beef cattle owners, as well as pig and poultry farmers “in the context of the crisis caused by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.”
Romania will allocate €16.1 million and more than €25.3 million, respectively, for these programs, which are intended to compensate for losses due to rising prices for feed, fuel and other farming costs.
This brings the total amount of funds allocated for the three programs to €95.65 million.
