Rapeseed acreage decreased by 10% in Ukraine

This year, the area under winter rape will decrease, but the total area under winter crops will increase compared to last year. This was stated by First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy Taras Vysotskyi at a briefing at the Ukraine Media Center.
“The area under winter rapeseed decreased slightly, by about 10%, by about 100 thousand hectares. This is due to the fact that in many regions the weather did not allow sowing, for example, in Dnipropetrovs’k region there was a drought and it was not possible to sow. In terms of winter wheat and barley, we see an increase of about 10% in terms of sowing rate,” he said.
As of this week, winter wheat and barley sowing is 8% ahead of last year.
According to Vysotsky, the total area of winter crops this year may be higher due to the growth of wheat.
The deputy minister also commented on the possible negative effects of the frosts that are expected in the near future.
“Frosts can have an impact if it is the first phase of the crops’ vegetation. However, the consequences depend on how severe the frost is, and whether it will be short or long-lasting. We agree that there is a risk, but this does not mean that there will be an immediate impact,” Vysotsky added.
