Rainfall delays wheat planting in Argentina

This week, wheat sowing in Argentina has slowed down significantly due to the resumption of rainfall in areas already affected by excess water, Zerno On-Line reported, citing the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange.

In particular, in the central and southeastern parts of Buenos Aires Province, field work was completely suspended in anticipation of improved soil conditions. Some crop losses were even noted due to waterlogging, which will force reseeding.

In the central and northern agricultural zone, where sowing is almost complete, crops are developing well. 96.9% of crops are in normal or excellent condition, which creates encouraging conditions for the transition to tillering.

By July 17, 92.8% of the projected 6.7 million hectares were sown with wheat in Argentina. The sowing rate is 2.2 percentage points behind last year’s.

The harvesting of late-ripening corn continues at a good pace. By July 17, 78.9% of the entire area under corn had been threshed and 40.4 million tons had been threshed.

According to the forecasts of the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange, the gross corn harvest this year will amount to 49.0 million tons.
