Pumpkin seed shortage hits the EU as demand outpaces supply
European markets are facing a growing shortage of pumpkin seeds after a smaller harvest in China, the main global supplier. According to Chelmer Foods, demand across the EU now exceeds available supply, especially for products that meet the bloc’s strict quality standards. As a result, some distributors have begun charging extra fees for fast deliveries.
The lack of high-quality seeds has created favorable conditions for market speculation. Some traders are holding back their stocks in anticipation of further price increases. However, analysts note that price pressure remains limited for now, as major market players seek to maintain stability and avoid sharp fluctuations.
Chinese exporters are currently shipping large volumes of pumpkin seeds to international markets, but these supplies are still insufficient to cover Europe’s needs. The shortage is particularly severe for seeds that comply with EU pesticide standards — a segment where suitable products are almost unavailable, pushing prices significantly higher.
The new crop is slowly entering the market and cannot yet keep pace with demand. As a result, several packaging companies are introducing surcharges for customers requesting expedited delivery. Growing numbers of buyers are willing to pay these premiums, further fueling price increases across the sector.
Experts expect the shortage to persist until larger harvest volumes reach the market. Until then, prices are likely to remain elevated, while European processors brace for possible supply disruptions and explore alternative sourcing options beyond China.
