Polish protesters spill Ukrainian grain from a railroad car near Medyka checkpoint
On the morning of February 20, Polish farmers intensified their protests near the Medyka-Shehyni checkpoint. The protesters blocked the railroad. They also scattered grain from a freight car on the tracks. A Suspilne correspondent reported this from the scene.
“This is a reaction to the influx of grain from Ukraine. It is very bad. People are desperate and can’t help themselves. No one controls this: neither the Polish authorities nor the Ukrainian ones,” said Roman Kondruv, co-organizer of the Polish farmers’ protest.
According to him, the protesters are throwing grain “out of emotion.”
“We have no influence on people, they can’t stand it and throw it out. We are bankrupt, because everything is being taken out of Ukraine uncontrollably,” the protest organizer added.
The Suspilne correspondent added that the police arrived at the scene. Thus, in less than half an hour, Polish farmers unblocked the railroad.
Earlier, the website of NSZZ RI “Solidarność” announced that the protest would last at least until March 10.
“On February 20, as part of a 30-day general strike of farmers, we announce that all protests will be focused on a complete blockade of all border crossings between Poland and Ukraine,” the statement said.
