Poland exported a record 11.7 million tons of grain last season
Poland exported record volumes of grain crops in the last agricultural season (2022-2023) amid better logistics, additional payments for farmers and a ban on grain imports from Ukraine. This was reported by Marcin Wronski, Deputy Head of the National Center for Agricultural Support of the Republic.
According to the center, the total export volume amounted to 11.7 million tons of grain, of which 5.7 million tons were wheat and 4.3 million tons were corn. “The level of exports of these grains was higher than in the previous season. The volume of wheat imports almost doubled, and corn imports increased by 34%,” Wrocki told the Polish press agency PAP.pl, emphasizing that this allowed to prepare warehouses for the new harvest.
According to him, earlier the country recorded grain surpluses due to rising prices on world markets and falling demand for grain. “There was also an influx of grain from Ukraine,” Wronski emphasized. In the current situation, Poland had to urgently work on establishing the logistics and transportation infrastructure, introduce additional payments for farmers and achieve a ban on grain imports from Ukraine, with only transit to third countries.
The majority of Polish grain – 65% – was sold on the EU market, mainly in Germany (4.4 million tons) and the Netherlands (1.3 million tons). 1.1 mln tons were shipped to Nigeria and 0.6 mln tons to South Africa. Most of the grain was exported through seaports in Gdynia, Gdansk, and Świnoujście.
