Poland has almost doubled its table egg imports in the first nine months of 2025 compared to last year. According to egg producers, the industry is trying to maintain foreign markets through re-export, writes Bankier.pl.

According to an analytical report by the KOWR Analysis and Strategy Bureau, in January-September 2025, table egg imports to Poland amounted to 25.4 thousand tons, while in the same period in 2024 – 13.7 thousand tons. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Poland, in the same period in 2025, Polish producers exported 179.8 thousand tons of eggs for various purposes (in 2024 – 181.6 thousand tons).

Poland imports most eggs from Ukraine. In the first three quarters of last year, 5.6 thousand tons were imported from Ukraine, while in 2025 – already 10 thousand tons (taking into account the fact that data for 9 months of 2025 may still be revised).

Latvia is in second place: in 2024, 2.5 thousand tons were imported from this country, and in 2025 – 3.9 thousand tons.

A significant increase was also recorded in the case of Bulgaria, from where 2.1 thousand tons were imported (in January-September 2024 – only 19 tons). At the same time, imports from Germany decreased significantly – from 3 thousand tons in 2024 to 391 tons in 2025.

Turkey has become a new player on the Polish egg market. If last year there were no imports from this country, then for the period analyzed by KOWR in 2025 it will already amount to about 1.2 thousand tons.

As stated by the President of the National Federation of Poultry Farmers and Egg Producers, Pawel Podstavka, the growth in imports of table eggs is associated with the need to maintain export markets.

“Poland continues to have a surplus of egg production. Due to bird flu and the so-called pseudo-fowl plague, it is no longer as large as in previous years, but it is still enough to ensure domestic consumption, in accordance with the principle that Polish products have priority on Polish shelves. At the same time, there is a problem with obtaining a sufficient number of cheaper eggs for processing, which are subsequently exported to other markets,” he explained.

Podstavka emphasized that the retail egg market should be clearly distinguished from the segment intended for processing. According to him, in order to preserve sales markets, the industry is currently insured by re-export, which also allows keeping prices on the domestic market at an acceptable level for consumers and preventing speculation.

According to Podstavka, the sharp reduction in egg imports from Germany is associated with the growth of egg production in Poland in the floor-keeping system, which meets demand in retail trade, as well as with high prices and problems with the availability of eggs in Germany due to bird flu.

In his opinion, it cannot be ruled out that in the near future, together with Turkey, Moldova may become an important exporter of eggs.

“The European Union is opening up to eggs from Moldova, which is not only a neighbor of Ukraine, but can also become an intermediary in the trade of eggs between companies belonging to concerns operating in Ukraine and EU countries. “Whether this will happen will depend on the development of possible mechanisms to restrict the export of products from Ukraine to EU countries and states that have association and free trade agreements with the EU, in particular Moldova or Montenegro,” the president of the federation believes.
