Pea exports from Russia hit a record high

According to the Federal Center for Grain Quality Assurance, Russia exported some 700 KMT of peas in July-November 2021/22. This is almost twice as much as a year earlier and an all-time high for this period. Such exports were made possible due to a good crop that resulted mostly from an increased planted area, UkrAgroConsult reports.

The highest exports of Russian peas – almost 224 KMT – were seen in September (a record monthly volume). The pace of exports has slowed down since October, but we believe they will ultimately exceed the five-year average anyway.

Looking into Russian pea exports by destination, it is seen that almost all major buyers increased purchases. The exception is Pakistan, which bought enough last season and expects a good domestic crop of grains and pulses this season, therefore it cut imports.

The EU’s share in Russian pea exports slightly shrank, mostly due to boosted imports by Turkey (which, unlike Pakistan, faced domestic crop difficulties in 2021). We expect Turkey to continue actively importing peas in order to fill their shortage caused by the crop decline.
