Pakistan has fallen short of its wheat production target for the Rabi Season 2024-2025, with the estimated yield standing at 28.42 million tons from 9.1 million hectares, well below the target of 33.58 million tons from 10.368 million hectares. This marks a 10% decrease in production compared to last year.

During a meeting of the Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, it was revealed that while wheat production has decreased, other crops have shown positive trends. Onion production for the 2024-2025 season is expected to reach 2.7 million tons, showing a 15.7% increase, despite a 17.3% reduction in the cultivated area.

Similarly, tomato and potato production have seen growth, with an 8.8% increase in both crops, reaching 654,000 tons each from 53,000 hectares.

The FCA also set production targets for the Kharif season 2025-2026, including cotton with a target of 10.18 million bales from 2.2 million hectares, rice at 9.17 million tons from over 3 million hectares, and sugarcane at 80.3 million tons from 1.1 million hectares. Maize production is also set at 9.7 million tons from 1.5 million hectares.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported a significant reduction in rainfall, with 39% below-average precipitation recorded from January to April 2025, and 60% below-average precipitation in April, particularly in southern regions like Sindh and Balochistan.

The PMD expects above-normal precipitation from May to July 2025, with temperatures remaining above normal in most parts of the country, except in July.

The meeting, which discussed the status of Rabi crops and set future targets, included representatives from various provincial agriculture departments, the Pakistan Meteorological Department, and other key agricultural bodies.
