Pakistan allows imports of GMO soybeans

Pakistan authorizes imports of GMO soybeans, addressing feed problems in the poultry sector while raising biosecurity concerns. Licenses have been issued to 39 companies, Pakistan Today reported.
The Pakistan Poultry Association (PPA) welcomed the move, calling it crucial to maintaining a steady supply of protein, especially after the long-standing ban on GMO soy imports.
The ban, initially imposed to address undeclared imports and biosecurity concerns, has led to protein shortages and rising poultry feed costs. More than 60% of industry participants have reportedly reduced or closed down production due to high costs.
The decision came after ongoing debate and opposition from several government factions, including the Department of Climate Change and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Some officials continue to express concern about the possible infiltration of GMO seeds into local agriculture.
The PPA emphasized that the approval marks progress for the industry and expects productivity gains. With the licenses, companies will be able to stabilize feed supply chains, which could lead to more competitive prices in the market.
