One of the largest rapeseed processors in Germany has opened a branch in Ukraine
In early October, a branch of Getreide AG, one of the largest rapeseed processors in Germany, was officially opened in Ukraine.
According to the YouControl analytical system, Getreide AG Ukraine has been registered since March 2024.
“Previously, we used to ship from Ukraine from the Black Sea ports. But then the war started and the ports were blocked. And we started thinking with Björn (Stendel – ed.) about how to continue working with Ukraine. That’s how we came up with the idea to set up a division here and buy from farmers through it. Before the war, we also planned to get involved in processing in Ukraine. We even had a few plans, but everything was put on hold… We are developing other business models in Ukraine. For example, we have started to transport Ukrainian sunflower oil, which is a new direction for us. And we are looking for more business cases,” said Torsten Tiedemann, Chief Operating Officer of Getreide AG, during the presentation of the branch in Ukraine.
Getreide AG Ukraine buys rapeseed from Ukrainian producers and exports it to its processing plant in Rostock. The company is also the exclusive representative of Astra Bioplant, a Bulgarian company specializing in the production of vegetable oils, biodiesel, glycerin and meal. As part of this cooperation, Getreide AG Ukraine buys sunflower oil in Ukraine with delivery to Chornomorsk, transships it there and sends it to the Bulgarian plant.
The branch is headed by Björn Stendel, who previously worked for Allseeds Group, Viterra Ukraine LLC, and others. Konstantin Taranov is responsible for trading in Ukraine. Currently, the Ukrainian team consists of 5 people.
“Ukraine needs help not only with weapons and funds, but also with assistance on the way to European integration. We need to change people and their outlook. In Europe, a contract is a contract. You can’t say, ‘I’m sorry, it was a mistake’. No, in Europe, you have to do business in a completely different way, and agricultural producers have to be ready for it. This was also one of the reasons why our company decided to open an office here,” Björn Stendel comments.
Since the beginning of 2024/2025 MY, the company has shipped more than 130 thsd tonnes of rapeseed. Currently, they work with those agricultural producers in whom they are absolutely sure. The list of clients includes such top companies as MHP, Eridon, Astarta, Vilia, Agrosem, Nibulon, etc.
