Oman’s wheat production to exceed 7,700 tons

Omani farmers have begun harvesting their 2024-2025 wheat crop, with officials predicting total output will exceed 7,700 tonnes, slightly up from the estimated 7,500 tonnes harvested in the previous season. This performance is supported by government initiatives, including subsidies for 30 tonnes of wheat seeds and free provision of harvesting machinery. Wheat remains a strategic crop for the country’s food security, and farmers are receiving technical support and modern irrigation systems to improve efficiency. At the same time, Oman continues to import significant quantities of wheat, which are estimated to be several hundred thousand tonnes in 2023/2024, as domestic production covers only a fraction of the country’s needs.

Wheat’s popularity is due to its low water requirements, high nutritional value and accessibility. Oman Flour Mills is coordinating the harvest, and the Agriculture and Fisheries Development Fund is facilitating the expansion of the planted area, creating the potential for further production growth. Despite the increase in domestic production, Oman remains dependent on wheat imports, which are key to ensuring a stable food supply.
