Not only Ukrainian producers, but also EU countries have benefited from the increase in sugar exports – Ogorodov

Not only Ukrainian producers, but also EU countries have benefited from the increase in sugar exports, as the European market has been experiencing a deficit in sugar production for the fourth year in a row, Roman Ogorodov, CEO of Ukrprominvest-AGRO, told Latifundist.com.
According to him, with the total consumption (including industrial consumption) at 17 million tons of sugar per year, the EU has been producing about 14 million tons in recent years.
“And almost half of it was due to the processing of imported raw sugar. The rest of the demand was covered by imports of white sugar, in particular, Ukrainian sugar,” says Ogorodov.
He added that in total, the share of sugar imports from Ukraine is not so significant – from 100 thousand to 400 thousand tons per marketing year, but in any case, it supported the Ukrainian industry.
“Look, we didn’t export sugar to Germany. In Europe, sugar is produced in the northern region, where 90% of production is concentrated. These are Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, and Poland. At the same time, there is no sugar production in southern Europe. That is, the logistics flow is directed from north to south, to the Balkans. And this is, in principle, our natural market in terms of geography. Naturally, we were transporting sugar there, competing with European producers in terms of price and logistics costs. Everything is fair,” Ogorodov said.
