Morocco’s grain production could grow by 41%

Morocco’s Agriculture Ministry expects the gross grain harvest to rise to 4.4 million tonnes this year, up 41% from last year, thanks to rains in March and April, The North Africa Post reports.
Morocco’s agriculture has suffered from drought for seven consecutive years. Last year, only 3.1 million tonnes were harvested, well below the average of 7 million tonnes.
Although rainfall has increased by 19% this year, it is still 18% below average. Thus, the country remains in a moisture deficit.
Farmers may harvest 2.4 million tonnes of soft wheat, 1.06 million tonnes of durum wheat and 0.9 million tonnes of barley this year, the Agriculture Ministry predicts.
Agricultural production may increase by 5.1% this year after falling by 4.8% last year.
