Morocco to increase grain imports next season due to crop failure
Cereal crop development in Morocco for the 2024 harvest is taking place under difficult conditions. Dry and hot weather in January and February may reduce the harvest to record low levels, especially in the southern parts of Morocco. This is according to a report by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS USDA).
FAS USDA forecasts Morocco’s wheat production for the 2024/2025 season (June-July) to fall to 2.3 million tons (4.16 million tons this season), including soft wheat to 1.55 million tons and durum wheat to 0.75 million tons. The barley harvest will be reduced to 0.65 (1.35) million tons.
The poor harvest will increase wheat imports to 7.5 (6.5) million tons, 52% higher than the average for the previous ten seasons. Barley imports will rise to 1.5 (1.4) million tons.
