Morocco has launched a scientific study to assess the potential use of cannabis in animal feed as part of efforts to expand the plant’s legal applications in the agricultural and veterinary sectors. The research focuses on the poultry industry and aims to identify alternatives to growth-promoting antibiotics.

The initiative was announced by the Moroccan Agency for the Regulation of Activities Related to Cannabis (ANRAC) following the signing of a framework agreement with the Hassan II Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine in Rabat. Under the partnership, researchers will examine the use of a cannabis-derived molecule in poultry feed.

The research program will run for 10 months and is expected to result in clear protocols for incorporating the cannabis-based molecule into feed suitable for industrial use. Scientists will evaluate its impact on poultry gut health, immune system strength, and overall productivity in chicken farming.

If successful, the study could confirm the cannabis molecule as an effective alternative to growth-promoting antibiotics, helping improve both productivity and the quality of poultry products. The project comes amid Morocco’s broader cannabis law reforms, launched in 2021, which allow the plant’s legal use for medical, cosmetic, and industrial purposes under a regulated framework.
