The Kyrgyz authorities are placing greater emphasis on food security. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture Bakyt Torobaev has instructed flour mills to increase production to at least 200,000 tons of wheat per year. According to him, this volume will allow the domestic market to be supplied for 4-5 months and reduce dependence on imports.

Torobaev made this announcement at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Orion-Extra flour mill in the Zhayyl district. He stressed that the ministry is ready to support the industry, from seed selection and soil analysis to mechanization. However, without cooperation between processors and farmers, he noted, the country will not be able to compete with cheaper wheat from Russia and Kazakhstan.

The context shows that the agricultural sector is becoming a driver of economic growth. In the first half of 2025, Kyrgyzstan’s GDP grew by 11.7%, exceeding 711 billion KGS. Of this, more than 48 billion came from the food industry. From January to May, flour mills processed over 215,000 tons of grain. The new plant will be able to process up to 250 tons per day, which is three times more than the current capacity. The enterprise is expected to have a multiplier effect, from logistics to trade, and strengthen the region’s economy.
