Kazakhstan to reduce wheat crops by 430 thou hectares
In 2024, Kazakhstan plans to reduce the area under wheat by an average of 430 thousand hectares. By 2028, the area under this crop should decrease by 855 thousand hectares. The Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan explains such plans by the need for diversification and moving away from monoculture.
By reducing spring wheat plantings, the goal is to increase the area of highly profitable priority crops. Thus, in the current season, the company plans to increase the area of oilseeds by 414.7 thou hectares and fodder crops by 96.4 thou hectares.
The largest decrease in wheat plantings is planned in Akmola region – by 251.3 thou hectares by 2028. In this region, the area under spring wheat increased from 2.8 mln ha in 2001 to 4 mln ha in 2009. However, by 2019, they decreased to 3.5 mln hectares due to the increase in oilseeds, but in 2023 they reached 4 mln hectares again.
