Kazakhstan successfully completed the 2025 sowing campaign, sowing 23.7 million hectares of agricultural land, which is 100% of the planned volume. The area under wheat amounted to 13 million hectares, which is 187 thousand hectares less than in 2024, due to a strategic reduction in the sowing of resource-intensive crops such as wheat, rice and cotton in favor of more profitable and more resilient crops. This trend reflects efforts to adapt agriculture to climate and market challenges.

This year’s sowing campaign was held with an emphasis on diversifying agricultural production and reducing dependence on monocultures. The government of Kazakhstan introduced new approaches to financing, making preferential loans available to farmers from December 2024, which allowed for the advance purchase of necessary inputs. The share of strategically important crops in the crop structure has increased: grains and legumes occupied 4.6 million hectares, and the area under oilseeds reached a record 430 thousand hectares, which is 161 thousand hectares more than last year. In addition, the area under fodder crops, vegetables and potatoes has been expanded.

The main grain-sowing regions remain Akmola, Kostanay and North Kazakhstan regions. Akmola region completed the sowing period earlier, having sown 5.5 million hectares, which is 63 thousand hectares more than in 2024, thanks to effective organization and 37 thousand units of equipment. In Kostanay region, oilseed crops increased to 755 thousand hectares, potatoes – to 7 thousand hectares, and buckwheat – to 21 thousand hectares. State support, in particular loans for 100 billion tenge and 76 thousand tons of preferential diesel fuel, ensured the timeliness of work.

The North Kazakhstan region sowed 4.4 million hectares, of which 3.3 million hectares are grain crops, and 760 thousand hectares are oilseed crops, which is 85.8 thousand hectares more than last year. Farmers used 470 thousand tons of seeds, 317.1 thousand tons of fertilizers and 52.2 thousand tons of preferential fuel at a price of 254 tenge per liter. The Ken Dala 1 and Ken Dala 2 programs provided 92.6 billion tenge, and 14.4 billion tenge went to purchase 442 units of equipment. Thanks to the early start of work and favorable weather, the region was one of the first to complete the sowing of legumes and oilseed crops.
