India. Sugar production in 2024/2025 MY will amount to almost 35 million tons
Experts expect that in the season 2024/2025 MY in India, the total sugar production will amount to 34.5 million tons, and 4 million tons will be used for ethanol production.

Speaking about the production forecast, industry expert and managing director of Meir Commodities, Raheel Sheikh, said: “We expect that in the season 2024/2025 MY in India, sugar production will amount to 34.5 million tons, and the redirection of sugar to ethanol production will amount to 4 million tons.”
He emphasized that farmers are paid well and on time, and they should probably expand their planted areas. Speaking about the prospects for Indian sugarcane production (2025 and beyond), he said: “We believe that with good rainfall and very high FRP, we should see an expansion of up to 6.0 million hectares. Maharashtra and Karnataka should have an excellent, probably record-breaking, harvest in the 2025/26 MY.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare recently released data on sown areas as of July 8, 2024. The data showed that this year’s sugarcane plantings reached 5.69 million hectares, up from 5.54 million hectares in 2023.
The government is also optimistic that India is on track to achieve 20% ethanol blending with gasoline by 2025. According to the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell’s (PPAC) Monthly Ready Reckoner report, in May 2024, ethanol blending with gasoline was 15.4%, and between November 2023 and May 2024, the total ethanol blending with gasoline was 12.6%.
