India is preparing for record production and resumption of sugar exports
India is likely to produce a record amount of sugar in the next marketing year from October 2025 after millions of farmers expanded cane crops due to abundant water supplies and lower prices for competing crops, farmers and industry officials said. This is reported by Reuters.
According to them, the resumption of production will allow the world’s second largest sugar producer to resume exports in MY 2025/26 after a shortage of rainfall caused a decrease in cane yields and two years of restrictions.
According to traders, Indian exports could limit world sugar prices by increasing supplies to the global market at a time when dry weather is expected to reduce supplies from Brazil.
“Last year we were not able to plant cane because there was no water for irrigation. This year, we have enough because we have received a lot of rainfall,” said farmer Amar Chavan, who planted cane on an area of 2.4 hectares (6 acres) in Solapur district of western Maharashtra state.
India’s resurgence in sugar exports underscores the impact of climate conditions on global agricultural markets. As weather patterns change, countries must adapt their agricultural strategies, which affects global trade flows and commodity pricing. This development highlights the interconnectedness of climate and market dynamics in the agricultural sector.
