India has increased its soybean oil imports by 93% since the start of the season

From April to June 2025, India imported 1.39 million tons of soybean oil, which is 40% higher than the same period a year earlier. Indian importers continue to diversify their supply markets, with the price level of the product remaining a key factor in this process, according to data from the industry portal Oil World (Germany).

Over the past three months, Argentina has become the largest supplier of soybean oil to the country, exporting 620 thousand tons of the product against 575 thousand tons for the same period last year, and Brazil – 278 (172) thousand tons, for the first time in the specified period, Nepal made deliveries – 217 thousand tons.

In total, since the beginning of the 2024/25 season, India has purchased 3.93 million tons of soybean oil on foreign markets, which is 93% more than in October-June 2023/24 MY (2.03 million tons), including supplies from Argentina increased to 1.87 million tons (1.03 million tons previously), Brazil – to 476 (4) thousand tons, Russia – to 231 (127) thousand tons and Paraguay – 200 (108) thousand tons.

Earlier it became known that India, which imports about 57% of its annual edible oil consumption, plans to expand palm plantations to 1 million hectares and increase oil production in order to reduce costs.
