India expects record wheat harvest
India’s agriculture ministry has confirmed its forecast of an unprecedented wheat harvest in the current crop year. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, head of the ministry, said this on May 12, as reported by Reuters.
The ministry did not change its March estimate, expecting 115.3 million tons of grain. This is 2% more than the 113.3 million tons harvested in the 2023/24 season.
Favorable weather conditions in most regions of India are contributing to the active progress of the harvesting campaign. According to the Minister, wheat harvesting has already been completed in Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Gujarat. In Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, grain harvesting is still in progress.
According to the data, wheat stocks in government granaries stood at 11.8 million tons on April 1, well above the government’s target of 7.46 million tons.
Wheat stocks are more than 4 million tons higher than in the same period last year.
