Harvest in Ukraine may start with significant delays

The winter wheat harvest in Ukraine, which traditionally begins in the second half of July, may undergo significant changes this year: from an early start at the end of June to significant delays until mid-July or later. This was stated by Vladislav Cherchel, director of the Institute of Grain Crops.

He explained that the combination of drought and cold weather has caused sharp regional contrasts in crop development. In the south and east, severe drought and heat stress may lead to premature termination of vegetation and early harvest. In contrast, low temperatures in the western and northern regions may delay ripening, leading to a late start to the harvesting campaign.

“Traditionally, the winter wheat harvest begins in the second half of July, but this year we may see everything from an early start at the end of June to significant delays until mid-July or later,” he said.

The current campaign is taking place under the coldest May conditions in two decades: temperatures were 4–6°C below normal, and frequent frosts delayed vegetation. At the same time, the southern and eastern regions are suffering from a prolonged drought, which has exacerbated the moisture deficit in the soil.

“Ukrainian meteorologists are warning of approaching heat waves of up to +40°C and possible tornadoes, which creates additional risks for key crops such as corn, soybeans, and sunflowers during critical stages of development. Unstable weather in June will be decisive for the final harvest schedule,” the expert concluded.
