Germany’s wheat harvest in 2024 will decrease by 12.7% to 18.8 mln tons
Germany’s wheat harvest in 2024 is likely to fall by 12.7% to 18.8 million tons due to unfavorable weather conditions. The harvest was particularly affected by persistent rains during the harvesting season, according to the German Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
The gross grain harvest is expected to drop by 7.2% to about 39.41 million tons.
German Agriculture Ministry head Cem Ozdemir said that crop development was hampered by poor weather conditions for most of the season. He also noted that “climate change-related challenges” marked their presence earlier than expected in the agricultural industry, but the country’s farmers managed to complete the harvest despite the great difficulties, writes Reuters.
It is still unclear what the quality of the grain will be, but due to the wet summer, it will be lower than last year and the percentage of protein content will be reduced, the agricultural authority suggests.
Germany’s winter rapeseed harvest in 2024 is expected to fall by 14.3% to 3.60 million tons. The corn harvest will increase by 8.8% and may amount to about 4.89 million tons, and the volumes of the later harvested crop will benefit from the summer rains, the German Ministry of Agriculture concludes.
