France to supply two thirds of Morocco’s soft wheat needs
French wheat exporters will provide two thirds of Morocco’s soft wheat requirements — around 3.5 million tons — in the 2025/26 marketing year, according to Philippe Heusele, international head of the French grain industry group Intercereales.
Total Moroccan imports of soft wheat, the country’s main staple, are estimated at 5.5 million tons this season, according to Moroccan traders and the French grains association Synacomex. Domestic production remains low due to ongoing drought, with this year’s soft wheat harvest reaching only 2.4 million tons.
Despite the weak harvest, Morocco’s wheat reserves remain at a “comfortable level,” covering more than three months of industrial millers’ needs, said Abdelkader Alaoui, president of the FNM industrial milling federation.
Moroccan traders attending the Intercereales conference in Casablanca said French wheat is best positioned in the market due to its availability and proximity to Moroccan ports compared to alternative origins such as the Black Sea region or Argentina.
From June to September, Morocco imported 1.5 million tons of soft wheat, including 996,000 tons from France, followed by the United States (95,000 tons), Russia (85,000 tons), and Lithuania (63,000 tons), according to data from the country’s grain traders’ federation FNCL.
