For the global grain market, 2025 started with rising prices

The grain market has started the new calendar year positively, prices are rising, industry analysts say, Dutch portal Nieuwe Oogst reported on January 2.

The market was under considerable pressure at the end of last year. On the futures market in Paris, a ton of wheat with delivery in March is quoted at €238 on January 2. This means that the wheat trade starts the year in Paris with a price level that is €17 higher than a year earlier.

At EU level, the price difference with last year is even greater. The regional exchange in Emmelord starts the year with a quote of €228 to €231 per ton. This is almost €25 per tonne more than at the beginning of 2024, when the quote was €205 per tonne.

Market sentiment is also a big difference, analysts say. A year ago the market was very gloomy. There was a lot of wheat in the Black Sea countries. It dominated world trade.

In the race to export large quantities, the price could only go one way – down. The lowest point was reached in early March, with the quote on the futures market below €190 per ton. 2024 started in Paris with a price of €221 per ton.

Prices are much higher at the start of 2025. russia harvested 10 million tons less wheat than a year ago, and it has already exported a lot. Because of the much smaller harvest, especially in France, the EU also has less to sell on the world market.

The fact that Russia and the EU can supply much smaller volumes of wheat to the world market has led to higher prices at the beginning of the new year. Producers are in a good mood and hope to make good profits.
