First batches of watermelons hit the Ukrainian market

The first local watermelons of the 2024 harvest have appeared on the Ukrainian market, as reported by EastFruit analysts.
Farmers from the southern regions and Zakarpattia have commenced the harvest of these melons. The watermelon season has started several weeks earlier than last year; however, so far, wholesalers are purchasing from only a few producers.
Currently, the primary sales of watermelons are conducted at prices ranging from 20-26 UAH/kg ($0.49-0.64/kg), with offering volumes remaining quite limited. It is worth noting that current wholesale prices for the first batches of watermelons are, on average, 11% higher than at the beginning of last year’s season.
According to market participants, mass sales of watermelons in Ukraine are expected to begin closer to mid-July. Farmers do not rule out a sharp price drop in the near future due to increased supply from local producers.
