Farmers in Latvia are protesting. They demand an immediate stop to imports from russia and belarus

On Monday, February 5, farmers protested in 16 cities across Latvia. One of the main demands of Latvian farmers is an immediate ban on imports from russia and belarus. This was reported by the Delfi portal.
The farmers took to the roads with tractors, some of which carry Latvian flags and banners with slogans and demands to the government.
“During this action, we call on the protesters not to obstruct the movement of operational vehicles, to observe the peaceful nature of the movement of agricultural and other types of equipment on the roads. We have handed over to Prime Minister Evia Silina and Minister of Agriculture Armand Krause the demands put forward by representatives of the agricultural sector. We are waiting for answers and concrete solutions. Otherwise, we are ready to go to Riga on February 12,” said Juris Lazdins, head of Zemnieku saeima.
What Latvian farmers demand:
- Introduce an immediate ban on the import of food from russia and belarus without a transition period;
- restore the reduced VAT rate of 5% on fruits, berries and vegetables in Latvia;
- increase the competitiveness of the industry;reduce bureaucratic red tape in the agricultural sector;
- facilitate access to financing and working capital programs;
- abolish national-level land encumbrances or other land use restrictions.
