Farmers in Brussels protested against the free trade agreement with South America
European farmers protested yesterday in Brussels against the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement with South American countries, Reuters reports.
Farmers in France said they would protest next week.
Brazil insists on signing the EU-MERCOSUR agreement by the end of November, while it holds the presidency of the Group of Twenty (G20). Supporters of the deal, including Germany, say the agreement will open more markets for their exports.
Meanwhile, France, the EU’s largest agricultural producer, is trying to convince other bloc members to form a minority bloc against the deal.
French Prime Minister Michel Barnier said after a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels that Paris cannot and will not accept the agreement under its current terms.
Farmers say a deal with the Mercosur bloc, which includes Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay, would create unfair competition for farmers and food producers in the Euro bloc, as it would allow large volumes of products to be imported that are not subject to the same strict rules they face in the EU.
