Export of sunflower oil from Moldova in October this year exceeded import by 4.5 times

In October 2024, Moldova exported 7.6 thousand tons of sunflower oil and imported 1.7 thousand tons. Exports exceeded imports by 4.5 times. Moldova is exporting crude oil to Romania, Turkey and Bulgaria this season. The main volume of production is produced at local enterprises.
The export volume of packaged sunflower oil amounted to 927 tons. The main destinations were Luxembourg (61% of the total volume), Switzerland (23%) and Romania (15%).
Imports of sunflower oil to Moldova in October 2024 are mainly supplies from Ukraine – 1.4 thousand tons (88% of total imports), followed by Russia – 189 tons and Romania – 11.4 tons. Experts note that this is exclusively packaged sunflower oil. Imported packaged oil has a significant market share, but its price remains lower than that of locally produced oil.
Moldova retains its status of a major regional exporter of raw sunflower oil, but lags behind in terms of packaged oil supplies. At the same time, demand for finished products is growing. In the future, it will be important for the Republic to develop sunflower oil processing capacity and expand exports for high value-added products.
