Excess pesticide levels found in third shipment of Argentine sunseed to Bulgaria
Excess pesticide levels have once again been detected in a shipment of Argentine sunflower seeds imported into Bulgaria, this time from a third vessel. Laboratory tests revealed that deltamethrin levels were twice the permitted limit. Samples were collected by inspectors from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) in the presence of local farmers.
In total, Bulgaria has already received three shipments of sunseed from Argentina, amounting to nearly 118.5 thousand tonnes. Sampling is carried out directly at the port before unloading, allowing authorities to closely monitor the quality of imported raw materials.
Earlier tests on the first two vessels also showed pesticide residues exceeding EU limits by three to five times, prompting tighter controls and increased regulatory scrutiny.
Authorities are tracking the movement of the imported sunseed throughout the entire supply chain — from the port to storage, processing, and eventual distribution or export. The monitoring is conducted in coordination with customs and other relevant institutions.
The importer has provided written assurances that the processed products will not enter the EU food market. Instead, they will either be exported to non-EU countries where such residue levels are permitted or used for technical purposes, including biodiesel production. Additional shipments from Argentina are expected in the coming weeks and will also be subject to strict inspection.
