European producers call for reduction of potato area
Representatives of the North-West European Potato Group (NEPG) emphasize the need to reduce potato plantings in North-West Europe in order to maintain the economic viability of farms. Farmers should not produce products whose market price will be lower than the cost price. Producers call on processing enterprises to provide clear information on raw material needs by the end of the current season as soon as possible.
This was reported by the NEPG press service.
“The long-term viability of the sector requires a balanced and respectful approach between all links in the potato supply chain,” the NEPG notes.
Experts recommend that farmers be careful when signing contracts, as profits will largely depend on sales on the free market. Experts also warn that volumes of potatoes that are not covered by contracts or have quality defects risk being left without a buyer. In such cases, farmers are advised to consider alternative sales channels, including animal feed or biomethanation.
“Potato growers should only plant what they believe they can reasonably sell at a fair price,” the group said in a statement.
In addition to market factors, the industry is also facing pressure from potential increases in energy, fertilizer and fuel costs due to the conflict in the Middle East. At the same time, developing varieties that are more resilient to climate change and require less water remains a priority for the industry’s sustainable development.
