European Producers Call for Delay in the Implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation
European industry associations and producers have appealed to the European Commission to postpone the implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). The signatories support the regulation’s goal to combat deforestation and forest degradation to protect the climate, biodiversity, and ensure sustainable supply chains. However, they emphasize the lack of clear guidelines and necessary tools for compliance, with less than 100 days remaining until the regulation comes into effect. This creates legal and market uncertainties that could lead to the bankruptcy of small businesses and job losses in rural areas.
Industry associations warn that implementing the EUDR within the planned timeline could cause significant market disruptions and severely impact European producers. Companies are already facing difficulties in negotiating contracts for the coming year, threatening supply chain stability and increasing prices for consumer goods. Producers are urging the European Commission and Member States to delay the regulation’s entry into force, provide the necessary tools for compliance, and allow businesses sufficient time to prepare for the new requirements.
