European Parliament postponed the implementation of the EUDR for another year
The European Parliament has approved by 405 votes targeted amendments to the EU Deforestation Regulation, which was informally agreed with EU member states on 4 December. The implementation of the EU Regulation to prevent deforestation and forest degradation (EUDR) has been postponed for another year.
This is stated in a statement published on the official website of the European Parliament.
All businesses will have one more year to comply with the new EU rules on preventing deforestation. Large operators will have to apply the Regulation from 30 December 2026, and small operators (private individuals and businesses with up to 50 employees and an annual turnover related to the relevant products of less than €10 million) from 30 June 2027.
This additional time is intended to ensure a smooth transition and to allow time for the improvement of the IT system used by operators, traders and their representatives to submit electronic due diligence applications.
The European Parliament has introduced a number of simplifications through amendments to the Regulation. In particular, micro and small primary operators will only have to submit a single simplified declaration, making it easier for businesses to comply with the law.
Only businesses that first place a product on the EU market will be responsible for submitting due diligence applications, not operators and traders who subsequently commercialise it.
By 30 April 2026, the Commission must present a report assessing the impact of the law and the administrative burden, in particular for micro and small operators.
The text of the amendments must be approved by the Council of the EU and published in the Official Journal of the EU by the end of 2025 for the changes to enter into force.
