According to an updated estimate from the European Commission, this year’s soybean harvest in EU countries is expected to be lower than last year’s volume following a reduction in the 2025 sowing area. Even the expected yield increase will not be able to offset this shortfall, reports the German Union for the Promotion of Oilseeds and Grains (UFOP).

According to the revised estimate, the 2025 harvest will reach 2.9 million tonnes, approximately 18,000 tonnes higher than expected in October. However, this still represents a decline of approximately 106,000 tonnes for the year as a whole. This is due to a reduction in the sowing area of approximately 7%. The yield will average 27.8 t/ha, exceeding both the previous year’s result (26.8 t/ha) and the long-term average.

Italy, with a harvest of 1.1 million tonnes, remains the leading soybean producer in the EU, followed by France with 387,000 tonnes. Balkan countries are expected to fall short of last year’s harvest results. This is particularly true for Romania, where the harvest totaled 245,000 tons, approximately 54,000 tons less than the previous year, despite a 12% reduction in planted area. German farmers reportedly harvested 134,000 tons of soybeans, almost 2% more than the 2024 target.
